Beautiful, sunny and warm days are inviting you for spring strolls and adventures. This is the time people like to go for a stroll outdoors or pick a trip to nearby and more distant places. Vipava and its surroundings feature a lot of hidden corners and ideas for a short break and exploration. This is why we will give you today a hint about where to go for a trip in Vipava. Let's start from the beginning. Did you know how the town of Vipava got its name? Of course, it got its name after the Vipava River, which is a major natural attraction here, as a source of such a shape cannot be found anywhere else in Europe. The karst water comes to the surface from large cracks and crevices at the junction between the impermeable flysch and the carbonate rocks that make up Nanos.
Did you know that the Vipava River has as many as seven permanent springs? Yes, and all of them are located right in the town of Vipava. Have you visited them already? The main springs of the Vipava River are Podskala and the dual spring Podfarovž, which are only a few metres away from the Central Square and Lanthieri Mansion. The southernmost spring is Pri Kapelici, followed by the Pod Lipco spring, which is used for the local water supply. The third group of springs is located in the central gable of the springs of the Vipava. On the southern part of this gable, water springs out from many cracks and fences under the house and gardens, and a larger spring is just behind the former mill. The most abundant spring is just below the entrance to the artificial tunnel of the Vipava Cave, the so-called Spring in the Cave. In addition to the mentioned two springs, also running into the central springs of Vipava is the waters in the impassable creviced tunnels, called Za Gradom. During high waters, a series of small jets appear from the rock crevices above the springs.
The springs of the Vipava River do not dry up even during greatest droughts and are so powerful that they make the Vipava is a mighty river right at its source. The Vipava is true refreshment in the summer. The river is also very famous among fishermen, as many species of fish live in the water.
The springs of the Vipava are protected as a natural monument, and are part of a wider area of natural sights and cultural and historical monuments of Vipava.
This charming little town is completely intertwined with karst springs and riverbeds, over which with many bridges have been built. Vipava is thus also called no less than the Slovenian Venice.
While discovering the springs, you will also get to know the other wonders of this town. Vipava features an interesting old town core where, in addition to the natural ones, there are also major urban attractions. So welcome to Vipava.
