Plečnik's monument to the fallen in the National Liberation War

According to some critics, the monument to the National Liberation War in Vipava, designed by the architect Jože Plečnik, is one of his most interesting monuments. It is said that Plečnik wanted to create something completely new, avoid memories of the past and think more about the present. The construction of the Cooperative Centre in the years 1948 to 1950 and the erection of Plečnik's monument to the fallen on 5 October 1952 completed the second Vipava square. In 1985 it was named Tito Square, and now it is called Central Square, and is a recognisable symbol of Vipava. On a small platform made of granite cubes stands a square concrete base surrounded by four cylindrical flower beds. On the pedestal there is a base with a pillar in which two squares with inscriptions are embedded, and a chapiter with four massive vine leaves with clusters is placed on the top as a symbol of viticulture.
